First of all, I want to appreciate all efforts done by Cocos2D team all this years. I have been using cocos 2D for more than 2 years and it's just an amazing engine, it's the most intuitive, simple and powerful 2D engine I've ever used. So thank you all for the good job.
I just want to explain my disappointment with the last 8 months of work done by our team. We are a little team, just 3 members: 1 coder with a bit of art experience, 1 coder with huge skills in music and 1 talented artist who does marketing stuff too. We had experience in videogames because we worked together in a game company before, and due to various circumstances we created our own game studio.
At this time we have released two games, one medium-large project (6 months) and a small project (1.5 months). We had pessimistic expectations, we were concious that both games would not be top hits, although one of them has quality (we thought that).
The fact is we have about 1000 downloads in 2 weeks and a revenue of 1$. Yes, almost 8 months of work and 1$ of profit. Both games are free and that 1$ is due to advertisement.
Personally I had other 2 apps, not games, and they are for a concrete public, a small piece of users. Both are paid apps. After months, one day I put them free just 24 hours. Store reaction: more than 2000 downloads!! I thought then if it were a game it could make thousands of downloads in its release day. Well, I was totally wrong.
We did a large marketing effort. We have no money so we wrote dozens of request to digital sites to review or game. We created facebook and twitter accounts and did so much noise as we could. Pain and no gain.
We know the store is hard, top 50 is just for the choosen ones. But we had so low downloads... we are disappointed and sad. We will keep trying but we need some money to pay bills and buy food.
Could anybody tell his story in the Store?
Do you think multiplatform is critical for the success of a game?
Thanks for read me.
