I couldn't find anything on how to use xcassets sprite atlases together with cocos2d so I wrote this simple category that imports and caches sprite frames and textures from the sprite atlas folders in Images.xcassets files without using any third party tools. Seems to work ok for basic sprite sheets and it really helps a lot to just have all your sprites managed in the project rather than using third party editors.
Since sprite atlases stored in Images.xcassets are generated when compiling the project you can also access and change the original files without the hassle of re-generating the sprite sheets manually.
