We actually did do a reversed version that's in the game, haven't posted that one yet :)
You can see towards the very end of the video here, where it coalesces all the game-over status text. The game video shows the effect in action a lot too.
And there's a "delay" subShatter that's in that sample code but not used in the video. In the game it divides a big rectangle alien ship into 2 squares, and then it'll slowly & randomly break a square into 4 smaller squares. Looks great for a big saucer slowly falling and breaking apart.
