I think Patreon is not very transparent. It is very difficult to understand their business model, and what goes into signing up. It is of course also very discouraging that they lost a lot of data recently.
KickStarter is marginally better. It still is a huge problem though, that there is no data on how many people actually get what they pay for. Thats is not cool.
In my case, I want to make a Swift version of Cocos2D.
I think I have the knowledge and experience, but I lack the funding. We are not talking big money here. I have set up a time 6 month plan, and a budget around 12-15K$. I have extensive experience in project management, so I know what I am doing.
And for that crowd funding would be perfect.
The drawback is of course, that unlike others who sell "great bags already produced in China", or "Lazor Razors from Star Wars", I really have no product to sell, as Cocos2D-PureSwift will end up being 100% for free.
On the other hand, Cocos2D have always had a very dedicated community, and I really believe I can make your investments worthwhile.
KickStarter project will be up in October, so I hope a lot of you will chip in.
