Months of hard work has gone into the next update to Cocos2D, and we are now excited to finally share what we have been working on. Version 3.2 adds a new powerful feature that we think will redefine how we think about the visuals in 2D games! We call it CCEffects. CCEffects is a set of filters that you can apply on any sprite in your game or to larger areas using the CCEffectNode. You can create your effects in just single line of code:
myNode.effect = [CCEffectPixellate effectWithBlockSize: 5];
However the real power of the effects come into play when you combine effects by stacking them using the CCEffectStack. You can combine any type of effects and Cocos2D will dynamically, under the hood, build an efficient shader to do the rendering job for you.
This first version comes with a basic set of effects; color adjustments, blur, bloom, pixellation, refraction, reflection and glass. Future versions will support many new types of cool effects. We truly cannot wait to see what you will create using these new tools!
Cocos2D 3.2 final release is now available! Some things have changed in the latest version of Cocos2D. There is no longer an installer for any Xcode templates. Instead, you create new projects through SpriteBuilder (once the projects are created, the use of SpriteBuilder is optional). There is two reasons that the old templates have been removed; they were very hard to maintain and it was very hard to update projects made with the templates to newer Cocos2D versions. SpriteBuilder solves both these issues in a great way (just drop in a new Cocos2D folder to update your project, or even better, let SpriteBuilder handle the updates for you).
This is where you will find the latest downloads:
SpriteBuilder 1.2.1 is up on the Mac App Store. It's the officially supported way of creating new Cocos2D projects.
